Network Cabling vs Wifi

The local airwaves in your home are likely crowded and getting increasingly so. Ten years ago, your home network might have amounted to no more than a laptop, a desktop, and maybe a DVR.

Almost every new product or service available today along with the things we do require the internet. Today, your network is congested with mobile phones, tablets, TVs, media streamers, music systems, CCTV and security systems, multiple smartphones—including those of your friends and children's friends—and maybe even a few appliances, nest smoke detectors and the pool controller.

Once the router, switches and Ethernet cables are installed, the end result is a workhorse system that is extremely reliable. Although wireless connections are constantly improving, you will find that wired networks are generally more stable and reliable.

Another reason wired networks are reliable is because the signal is not influenced by other connections. For example, if you have wireless networks that are close to one another, one signal could interfere with another which can compromise stability. Or, if you have walls or objects nearby, this has an impact on a wireless connection where a wired network connection is unaffected by these factors.

THE NETWORK Rack

Racks and AV enclosures are the essential infrastructure component for any installation. These simple steel frames often house mission critical AV components, but are habitually overlooked as an essential component of the overall system. As a result, the ordering and configuration of racks is usually left until very late in the project. Given the complex nature of today’s hardware and systems, that methodology is not efficient. Why? Because racks are the basic physical infrastructure of all AV systems and poor choices, or inadequate design, at this point will cause major headaches later on.

Establishing a standard

Establishing a standard — All of our home automation systems are built to a specific standard, and housing audio video components in a rack helps further perfect this standard. Any one of our installers and technicians can likely work on a well built rack with their eyes closed. They will know that network equipment, audio video receivers, amplifiers, etc., all have an assigned location from top to bottom. By knowing the precise location of AV components, and the connections between them, our technicians can troubleshoot a system problem more efficiently.

Building an equipment rack to a standard also allows for a faster initial install. It makes sense because the plan has already been laid out. When decisions are made ahead of time, and equipment consolidated in one location, our installers and technicians can spend less time scratching their heads, and more time building a well tuned home automation system. Without them, there would be no way to organise hardware, coordinate cabling, structure the signal flow of systems or perform a myriad of other often forgotten, but critical tasks. Racks also provide security, cooling, safety and increase serviceability.
